Pendleton, City Democrats ask Attorney General to Investigate Special Waste Drop-Off

Pendleton Town Democratic Chair James Sacco and Lockport City Democratic Chairman Roger Sherrie have written to Attorney General Eric Schneiderman asking him to investigate the September 23rd, 2017 “Special Waste Drop-Off” held at Lockport Town Hall. The Democrat leaders claim the event, and the postcard mailing announcing the drop-off, were “nothing but a partisan political advertisement” for Republican State Senator Robert Ortt and “his Republican friends in the greater Lockport area”.

The Special Waste Drop-Off mailer omitted Democrats Alderman-At-Large Joseph O’Shaughnessy, 2nd Ward Alderwoman Anita Mullane and Democrat endorsed 3rd Ward Alderman Mark Devine as event sponsors. Sherrie said these endorsed Democrat officials “were not even aware of the Special Waste Drop-Off prior to the mailing let alone contacted to be sponsors.”

“As residents of Niagara County and property owners in the City of Lockport, we resent and object to the use of public funds for political purposes”, wrote Sacco and Sherrie. “The fact only elected Republican or endorsed Republican officials were included as sponsors on a postcard mailing to area residents is shameful and an abuse of his (Ortt’s) office”, they added.

The Democrats say a grant from New York State was used for the mailing and believe, at a minimum, that Senator Ortt should reimburse taxpayers and that he was wrong to include use of the State Senate Seal. They also say that event sponsors should have reported the mailing as a campaign expense on their State Board of Elections campaign disclosure reports. They did not, according to Sherrie. “This is but another example of how local Republican officials collude with each other to mislead area residents”, said Sacco.

The letter also mentions the Attorney General’s investigation into the claim Senator Ortt’s wife was paid by the Republican County Committee for a “No Show Job” in order to supplement his income while mayor of North Tonawanda. This mailer is “another blatant violation of the public’s trust and further shows how Senator Ortt abuses and misuses public funds”, they wrote.

Sacco and Sherrie asked the Attorney General to commence an immediate investigation into the “Special Waste Drop-Off and that he prosecute Senator Ortt “to the fullest extent of the law.”
