Forster renews call for Senator Maziarz investigation.

Niagara County Democratic Chairman Nick Forster is calling on federal and state prosecutors to investigate New York State Senator George Maziaz. Forster said the abrupt resignations of two top Maziarz staff members raises more questions about the operation of Maziarz’s office that is the foundation of his political power.

“George uses his office to build and maintain political clout in state government as well as many local governments in his senate district,” Forster said. “This week we learned Maziarz's Chief of Staff Alisa Colatarci and Office Manager Marcus Hall both resigned. Given the U.S. Justice Department’s increased focus on public corruption in Albany, if there are reports of senior staff members resigning it should raise some eyebrows.”

Earlier this month, Republican State Senator Thomas Libous of Binghamton was indicted on charges of lying to federal agents stemming from an investigation into whether Libous got a job for his son with a law firm that lobbies in Albany with the promise of steering business to the law firm.  Libous’s son Matthew was charged with tax evasion.

In a statement, Preet Bharara, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, whose office brought the charges, said, “ Public servants should serve the public first, not themselves and their families.” Bharara office is reportedly investigating more than a half-dozen lawmakers.

Libous is the second-highest-ranking Republican in the state senate. Maziarz is also in the top Republican leadership. “The Republican controlled state senate is out of control and more indictments are on the way,” Forster said.

The Moreland Commission on Public Corruption found Maziarz spent $140,000 in campaign money on items unrelated to legitimate campaign expenses. “George used campaign money for things like expensive wines and designer chocolates and much of the money has never been properly accounted for,” Forster said.

Forster wants the U.S. Attorney, New York’s Attorney General and local District Attorneys to all look into Maziarz’s campaign spending and the operation of his office. “George has made his office a pig trough of political patronage where he and his family and friends feed at public expense.”
