Chairman Forster Calls On WNY GOP Delegation to Demand Skelos Resignation

Chairman Says Ortt and Ceretto Need to Clean their Own House
Niagara County Democratic Chairman Nicholas J. Forster today called on the Western New York GOP Delegation to demand NYS Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos resignation amid reports that he is the focus of a federal investigation for public corruption.
“I am calling on our local GOP state representatives to demand new leadership in the state senate and ask for Dean Skelos to resign immediately. It’s a disgrace that Senator [Rob] Ortt’s first act in Albany was to support this crooked leadership regime knowing that the second highest ranking GOP Senator [Tom Libous] was under federal indictment and that his political godfather, George Maziarz, the third highest ranking member of the leadership before retiring under a cloud of suspicion, is also the target of a federal investigation for campaign finance abuses,” said Forster.
In fact, Ortt was the handpicked successor of long-time GOP Senator George Maziarz who finds himself embroiled in a wide-ranging federal probe by the U.S. Attorney’s office focusing on his campaign finance irregularities amounting to hundreds of thousands of dollars of unreported expenditures. U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara picked up where the now defunct Moreland Commission’s investigation left off, warned public officials in January if this year to “Stay Tuned” as his investigations proceeded. Indeed, it was just reported by the Buffalo News that Henry F. Wojtaszek, the former Niagara County GOP chairman and longtime Maziarz confidant, was subpoenaed in December to appear before a Manhattan grand jury assembled by Bharara.
“Assemblyman John Ceretto put out a mailer recently calling for tougher penalties for elected officials found guilty of misconduct. This is the perfect opportunity for him to start the process and begin assembling his GOP colleagues to call for the immediate resignation of Senator Skelos,” continued Forster.
According to records obtained from the Niagara County Board of Elections, it appears that a recent spate of republican county and local officials have family members or associates that have switched political parties in an apparent effort to secure ballot access for their GOP endorsed candidates on minor party lines.
“In Niagara County, GOP corruption has a long pedigree and we can see it even today with. In the past two years we’ve seen Republican Town Supervisors resign in disgrace or under indictment. If Ceretto and Ortt are serious about cleaning up the culture of corruption, they can start by cleaning up their own house,” said Forster.
