Democratic Update on Healthcare

Health Care

Trump’s attempts to sabotage healthcare markets:

·         Trump is still deciding whether he will withhold crucial CSR payments as part of continued effort to sabotage healthcare markets.

o    His suggestion has already created major uncertainty that has caused insurers to raise premiums or leave markets entirely.

·         If Trump chooses to end CSR payments, he will directly impact millions of Americans who could see their premiums increase by as much as 19 percent.

o    Americans could be forced to pay a “Trump premium tax” next year that could amount to as much as 50% in Idaho for the most popular marketplace plan.

·         Republicans will own this: According to a recent poll, a majority of Americans know Trump and Republicans in Congress are responsible for any future problems with the ACA.

Senate’s failure to repeal the ACA:

·         Republicans failed again to repeal the ACA, despite having full control of the government and seven years to put together a replacement.

·         Now, Trump and Congressional Republicans should stop attempting to repeal and instead work to improve ACA with common sense solutions that continue to increase access and affordability of care.

·         Throughout this debate, Democrats have been willing and eager to sit down with Republicans and hash out how we can help improve the ACA.  President Trump and Congressional Republicans should follow suit.

Looking ahead:

·         The ACA is working: The CBO confirmed that under current law the healthcare markets will remain stable.  But they won’t be if Trump and Republicans keep working to sabotage healthcare markets.

·         Our fight is not done yet, and we can't let up. We still need to keep the pressure on Republicans and hold them accountable for taking steps to repeal health care and strip coverage from millions.

·         Democrats need to continue organizing, making calls and knocking on doors to make it loud and clear that health care is a right for all, not a privilege for a wealthy few.
